1. Świerk Science & Technology Park research infrastructure 2. The “Digital Reactor” project
2017.03.06 9:57 - Grażyna Swiboda1. Świerk Science & Technology Park research infrastructure, profile of activities undertaken in the Park, and some already accomplished research projects will be briefly presented to illustrate potential applications. 3D scanning methods offered by Structured Light 3D Scanner available in the Park will be outlined in more detail.
2. Construction of the MARIA research reactor designed by Polish engineers in 70’ is globally unique. That time designers worked with computers not nearly as powerful as computers commonly used to-day. Even so, successful development of the reactor shed a good light on the technology level in that time Poland (and the fact that the reactor is still commercially operated shows that level in the to-day Poland). MARIA’s task is not to produce or electricity, it is a research tool helping to acquire scientific knowledge in physics, chemistry, medicine, and broadly understood nuclear engineering.
Numerous NCBJ employees are now continuing that endeavour trying to find new HiTech applications. The “Digital Reactor” project to digitize all reactor blueprints perfectly fits that trend. The objectives of the projects include:
- To introduce modern methodology (fitting of virtual 3D objects) into the process of designing new research/HiTech facilities.
- To facilitate discussing possible re-configurations of the reactor core (3D visualization models enable to peek into core every nook and cranny).
- To facilitate reactor safety analyses (structural, heat-flow, neutrons etc.) conducted at high accuracy levels.
- To facilitate reactor security trainings (the VR methodology).
- To enrich educational offer of the Institute.
Digital Reactor is a pilot project qualified for financing within the Young Scientists call for proposals. The target solution (to be financed by other funds) will be a fully searchable CAD database of 3D objects MARIA reactor is composed of. It will also be a backup for 2D reactor blueprints acquired for more than 40 years.
The “Digital Reactor” project is supported by the Świerk Science & Technology Park that has offered competences and capabilities of its 3D scan/print lab.
