Utilization of the MARIA reactor

A research reactor is primarily a source of high-intensity neutrons. To a lesser extent, gamma radiation is also used, accompanying nuclear reactions involving neutrons or emitted during radioactive decays from, for example, burnt fuel.

The reactor itself and the processes taking place in it are also sometimes the subject of research especially when it concerns nuclear safety and radiation protection issues. The reactor can also be used for educational classes in reactor physics and technology.
